Bush Administration Defies Congress, Extends Dangerous Cross-Border Truck Pilot Project for Two More Years

Statement of Lena Pons, Policy Analyst, Public Citizen

In announcing today that it would extend its cross-border trucking pilot project for two more years, the Bush administration continues to flout Congress at the expense of highway safety. This is the latest of many moves by the administration to give Mexico-domiciled carriers operating authority in the United States beyond a limited border zone despite lawmakers’ clear instructions to the contrary.

Tell your US Rep. NO to lower public safety standards for the new highway bill

Public Citizen is leading a campaign to promote public safety over the interests of trucking companies. This Summer, Congress will begin drafting the new highway bill, SAFETEA-LU 2009. Already, trucking companies are lobbying our representatives for lower safety standards; this would result in higher fatalities and injuries for us, and would increase the rate of road deterioration.

Please tell your US Representative NO to the industry demands, and to put our safety first; visit Public Citizen's campaign webpage to send your letter (you may edit it, too). If you wish, instead, to call your US Rep., you can use the Capitol Switchboard at 202-224-3121; this is not a toll-free number.

Tell your US Representative and two US Senators to stop Pres. Bush's dangerous Mexican trucking campaign

Public Citizen, a Washington-based public safety advocate group, is running a grassroots internet campaign, to hold President Bush to follow the rules on trucking safety. He has time and again flaunted congressional actions and the popular will of the people by prematurely allowing Mexican freight trucks to travel across the US.

Please take a stand with Public Citizen and their supporters right now with Pres. Bush, and stop his relentless breaching of the law with his runaway Mexican trucking campaign. Take action with your US Representative and two US Senators here, or, reach their offices by calling the Capitol Switchboard at 202-224-3121. Thank you!

Tell your Congressmen NO to the NAFTA Trucks Pilot Program

Public Citizen is asking us to contact our Congressmen to stop the NAFTA Trucks Pilot Program.

Mexico-based trucking companies are gaining access to the U.S. with insufficient protections in place. Now, Congress is acting, but the Bush administration is threatening to veto any legislation that would hinder this pilot project. We are so close... the House and Senate came out of their negotiations on the final Department of Transportation appropriations bill with wording that would end all funds directed to a cross-border trucking program. This dangerous program cannot be allowed continued access to our nation's highways without proper safeguards.

If you wish to take action, please go to this website or contact your Representative and two Senators directly yourself.
