Sign the Citizens' Petition for American hope and promise to all federal candidates

Government reform orgs. deliver news on major events within their areas of expertise.

Recapture the Flag

It's been a tough few years for "we the people."

We've endured repeated abuses of power by the Executive Branch of our government. Time after time, we've watched Congress fail to stand up for what's right. We've seen the very symbols of our democracy tarnished, as our nation's reputation suffers at home and abroad because of these abuses.

That's why Common Cause has launched a campaign to Recapture the Flag and unite us around the promise and hope of America.

Then, find out where your candidates stand. We've asked every congressional and presidential candidate to make five simple promises:

• End torture, respect human rights and restore America’s reputation in the world.
• Respect the rule of law and fiercely challenge anyone who seeks to undermine the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.
• Root out corruption, special interest abuses and partisan prejudice in the administration of justice.
• Hold to account – without exception – anyone who breaks the law or violates the public trust.
• Protect personal freedom by rejecting warrantless spying and other affronts to individual liberty.

America can, and must, hold fast to the values that have made this country great - freedom from tyranny, respect for individual liberty and government based on the rule of law.

Let's make it clear that We The People expect no less from the next President and Congress.

The FOIA, or Freedom of Information Act, has become up-to-date to service increased government transparency demands. FOIA is a term used by the general public to request information from any federal government agency, based on the terms of the Act. It is expected to be signed into law by President Bush; for details on the FOIA changes, please see this Associated Press article.

Help restore habeas corpus today

Public Citizen is running a grassroots email campaign in order to restore habeas corpus. I can't think of too many more important reforms about we, the people, than this! Here is their message:

You know the saying, "If at first you don't succeed..."?
We have another opportunity to restore the right to habeas corpus now. The Senate is debating the defense authorization bill again this week, and Senators Leahy and Dodd have re-introduced the bill to restore habeas corpus as an amendment. Meanwhile, many continue to languish without due process to review the lawfulness of their detainment, and still more of us remain vulnerable.
Your help is urgently needed again. Please call your senators now.
As the Founders understood, in denying someone else's freedom, we ultimately surrender our own.
Thank you for all you've done and for not backing down. Take a few moments today to restore habeas corpus!
Sincerely,
Daniel De Bonis, Online Organizer, Public Citizen's Congress Watch Division action@citizen.org
